I’m in the process of developing some online courses for Virtually Scholastic that will be available through one of the popular online course marketplaces by the end of this year. The first course to launch will be on How to Calculate Your Hourly Rate as a Freelance Instructional Designer in Canada. Virtually Scholastic online courses will primarily be self-paced video courses. That means it’s time to pick a video creation software.
Educational Value of Using Whiteboard Animation Software
I found two videos that do a great job of explaining the research supporting the use of whiteboard animation software in education. The first is VideoScribe’s How whiteboard video technology works in education and the second is Truscribe’s The 12-ish Principles of Scribology.
My Pick
I love the look and feel of the RSA-style whiteboard animations, so I’ve been looking at the options available on the market to replicate their look and feel for my courses and instructional videos. I’ve found the perfect one to meet my goals: VideoScribe. After reviewing eight cloud-based and desktop applications, I’ve decided to go with VideoScribe because of the following:
- The whiteboard animations look the most attractive (not choppy, smooth transitions, no hairy hands, etc.)
- Their ebooks are a great free add-on for someone like me who will be creating whiteboard animations for the very first time
- They happen to have a great sale on during the month of October saving me $48 in the first year (from $144 to $96)
- I can work on video creation offline using the desktop application
- I retain ownership of my IP
Whiteboard Animation Software Comparisons
As part of the process of selecting a whiteboard animation software, I put together the comparison tables* below to help you in case you’re also looking into your options and aren’t sure which solution ticks most of your boxes.
